the ten Contrade taking part in the race) and subsequent departure of
the comparse to pay homage to certain important institutions of Siena
and then to the Palazzo del Governo in Piazza del Duomo |

from the Palazzo del Governo to the Via del Casato di Sotto for entry
into the Piazza. |

the Piazza del Campo (this can, at times, be preceded by a display from
a squad of Carabinieri on horseback). |

for the race upon the firing of the mortaretto. |

| After
the race, the winning contrada marches exultantly to the Basilica of Santa
Maria in Provenzano (or, in August, to the Cathedral) and subsequently
the festivities continue throughout the night in the neighborhood and
through the streets of the main part of the city. |

| The
trials and the last race of the horses, the "palio", can be
seen from the square, Il Campo, free of charge (when you are inside of
the square you can't go out till the end of the festival). People is a
lot, the waiting very long and the weather really hot...; but there are
some stands where you can buy drinks and snaks. There is also the possibility
to see the festival sitting down or appearing at a window of the buildings
in the square. The cost is very expensive and you must book in advance.
