Basilica di San Pietro
The first stone was laid by Giulio II on the 18th of April 1506. It was consecrated on the 18th of November 1626 by Pope Urbano VIII. Michelangelo built the marvellous dome. The large portico around the Piazza is the work of Bernini (1657-1667).

- Pietà (Mercy): sculptored by Michelangelo between 1488 and 1499. Of which Vasari said "It is a miracle that a stone has been reduced to such perfection that nature itself has not been able to produce...".

Musei Vaticani
Sistine Chapel: frescoes showing the story of creation (1508-1512) and the Last Judgement (1536-1541) painted by Michelangelo;
Room of the Segnatura: frescoes, which show The School of Athens designed by Raffaello from 1508 to 1511.
Piazza Navona
Dominating the centre of the Piazza is the famous and lively Fontana dei fiumi (the fountain of the four rivers), which is the work of Bernini (1651).
Chiesa San Luigi dei Francesi
- works by Caravaggio: Calling of St. Matthew (1600), Martyrdom of St. Matthew (1600) and St. Matthew and the angel (1602).
Fori Imperiali
An Archaeological site which, was already in existence in 500 B.C. It is where Julius Caesar and then other Emperors constructed the true "Forum" which are rectangular piazzas (squares), surrounded by temples and porticos of straight pillars.
Colosseo
The greatest amphitheatre was commissioned by Vespasiano in 72 A.D. and opened by Tito in 80 A.D., and was the home of the deadly gladiatorial combats.
Piazza di Spagna and the Spanish Steps
Famous for the steps, which link the Piazza to the church of Trinità dei Monti above, it is a typical expression of 16th Century art.
Piazza del Popolo
A work of genius of the Roman neoclassical town planning by G. Valadier (1815-1820) at the centre of the Piazza is the Flaminio Obelisk, which came from Eliopoli (XIII-XII A.D.).
Chiesa Santa Maria del Popolo
- works by Caravaggio: the Crucifixion of St. Peters (1601) and the Conversion of St. Paul (1601).
Pincio
Public Park loved by the Romans where you can admire a panoramic view of the city.
Galleria Borghese
- sculptures by Bernini:: Aeneas-Anchise-Ascanio (1618), The rape of Proserpina (1620-1621), Apollo andDaphne (1623);
- sculpture by Canova: Paolina Borghese (1808).
Piazza Barberini
It is famous for its commanding fountain of the Triton created by Bernini in 1643.
