| Gran
Canal |
|
| It is the most important communication route of the city. It's 400 metres long and it's width ranges from 30 to 70 metres, and divides the historical centre in two and is the main thoroughfare for water taxis and traditional gondolas. The most beautiful medieval palaces can be seen along its banks. |
|
| Ponte
di Rialto |
|
| Situated
half way along the canal, it is 50 metres long and at its highest point
is more than 7 metres above the water. Completed in the 16th Century,
this stone bridge on wood piling was built to replace a wooden bridge
and an earlier pontoon bridge that once was the only link between the
two banks of the Grand Canal. The shops lining the central passageway
make it particulary picturesque. |
|
| Basilica
di San Marco |
|
| Constructed
between the 11th and 15th Centuries the Basilica dominates the Piazza
with its five oriental cupolas and the golden Byzantine mosaics featuring
stories from the Old and New Testament. |
|
| Campanile |
|
| Construction
was started between 888-912 and was finally completed between 1511-1514.
It lower section contains Romanesque architecture while it is surmounted
with a renaissance belfry. |
|
| Torre
dell'Orologio |
|
| Constructed
between 1496 and 1499. It shows the hours, phases of the moon and the
signs of the zodiac. |
|
| Palazzo
Ducale |
|
| Founded
in 814 and re-constructed in 976 and 1105-1116, and it was finally completed
in 1536. Until the fall of the Venetian Republic it was the residence
of the Doge, the town hall and Court House. |
|
| Porta
della Carta |
|
| Situated
between the Basilica and the Ducal Palace. This 15th Century Gothic gate
is the main entrance to the palace. |
|
| Ponte
dei Sospiri |
|
| This
bridge connects the Ducal Palace with the new prisons. It was given this
nickname in 800 because it was imagined that prisoners crossing the bridge
between the court and the prison, would sigh as they took one last look
at St George's Island and the Venice lagoon, as they would most probably
never seen the light of day again. |
|
| Scala
Contarini del "Bovolo" |
|
| The
stairs were constructed in 1499. The architectural elements of the early
renaissance combined with Gothic-Byzantine building techniques, producing
an harmony of forms, with a typical Venetian character, in a monument
that is unique in its type. |
